Hong Kong - the food heaven

My first trip of 2012 - Hong Kong. I have been here many times and each time is about food rather than visiting places. Here comes the year's first food journey. ^_^

Recommended...

We tried...

Shrimp dumpling (晶瑩鮮蝦餃)
This is a standard dumpling wrap with prawn and pork meat. The prawn was not as expectedly crunchy but the overall taste is good.

Chicken feet (鳳爪)
Not too spicy for my taste with a little sweetness.

Salted egg bun (流沙包)
The salted egg is not as melted as I expected it to be and the salted egg taste is not strong enough but overall, still an ok item to order.

Crispy rice rolls with shrimp (脆皮鮮蝦腸)
This is rice roll wrap with some crispy fried butter-like flakes, chinese parsley and prawn. It was good with the crispy flakes but I personally don’t like the taste of chinese parsley.

Siu mai (蟹子燒賣皇)
I think this is normal Hong Kong standard siu mai.

Pineapple buns (真係菠蘿包)
You can taste real pineapple in this bun. However, it is canned pineapple and not fresh pineapple. I personally don’t like that taste of canned pineapple, so it’s just so-so for me.

Deep fried dumpling with wasabi (芥末咸水角)
Oh-no! I would usually skip wasabi but I tried this as it’s a recommended. Pork with wasabi? The wasabi taste is not very strong, milder than wasabi you eat in sushi but still something that I would rather skip. If you're a wasabi lover, you would like this.

Fried stuffed eggplant with shrimp paste (燒汁釀茄子)
The eggplant is so big that you can’t eat the eggplant and shrimp paste together but even if it’s eaten separately, it’s nice.

Steamed spareribs with black bean sauce (豉汁蒸排骨)
The spareribs is not hard to chew which I like but the black bean sauce taste is not strong enough.

Kam Wah Café (金華冰廳)
A famous shop for Pineapple bun (菠蘿包 菠蘿油). We did not manage to eat-in as we weren’t hungry but just wanted to try the pineapple bun. The queue is long even for takeaways. The buns are best to be eaten hot.

Location:
G/F 47 Bute Street, Prince Edward, Kowloon.
太子弼街47號地下

(Locatable at the cross-junction of Bute Street and Tung Choi Street)

Pineapple bun (菠蘿包)
The top crust is not so crispy but the bun is soft. It is nicer to eat if you don’t press the bun together. It will become hard bun instead of soft bun. Eating the whole bun on your own will feel a little dry and the bun does not have nice bread fragrant.

Flatten pineapple bun

Pineapple bun with butter (菠蘿油)
The top crust is crispier than the normal pineapple bun. The soft bun absorbs the melting butter which makes it taste better and not dry after eating the whole bun. Still lacking the bread fragrant.

Shing Kee (盛記 大排檔)
This is a place where you can experience eating at back lanes with only streetlights.

Location:
Opposite of 82, Stanley Street, Central
中環士丹利街82 對面 (爲食街)

The meal started with an old looking tea pot. When was the last time you have seen such a tea pot? There is no choice of what type of tea you want. I think it's just a common Pu er tea. Other than drinking the tea, we use it to wash our cutleries.

Our dinner is served...
Chicken with black bean sauce (豆椒雞
There isn't much black bean you can eat only minced black dots. You would not want to think if those are real black beans :p . Just an alright taste.

Stir-fried choy sum with garlic (菜心蒜茸

Yes, the presentation is horrible but it tastes good. The branch is crunchy with a little bit overcooked. I think it can be much more crunchy.

Fried pork ribs in sweet and sour sauce (生炒排骨)
If you expected the thick sweet and sour sauce, you won't get it from this dish but the overall is nice.
Eggplants and minced pork in spicy sauce stew in pot (魚香茄子煲)
My favourite dish from this stall for the night. You can just eat the eggplants, minced pork with sauce on rice. They give you big fat eggplants and it's not overcooked. The minced pork is also cooked with dried salted fish and dried shrimps (maybe). Love it! :)
Stir-fried clams in black bean and chili sauce (豉椒炒蜆)
This dish would taste better if it's less salty but the taste is nice.

Sam Tseng Chan Kee Roasted Goose (深井陳記燒鵝)
One of the oldest and famous roasted goose shop from Sam Tseng.

Location:
G/F, 427-427A Reclamation Street, Mongkok.
旺角新填地街427-427A號地下
(near to Langham Place)

They have many other branches.

I personally don't know how to appreciate how a good goose should taste like. As long as the goose dance on my tongue, it's good. We didn't know how to order as we didn't have the menu. So we let the waitress auntie to order for us which didn't know what they actually were until they came.

We were hungry that I forgot to take a photo of the roasted goose before we splited it. The goose is nice with a fragrant skin and nice chewy taste of the meat.
The roast goose was added on the plate ourselves
The roasted goose is the 2 pieces on the below right
Chicken rice (油雞飯)
The chicken is nice. I don't know what the small slices meat is called. It's a little cold but it's nice to eat.

Roasted pork rice (叉腩飯)
Roasted honey char siew and pork belly. The char siew is not the Malaysia type (burned) and it's a little hard. The pork belly is nicer.

The goose is still nice after a day if you plan to order takeaway.

Sen-ryo Japanese Restaurant (千両壽司)

This is just a random Japanese restaurant that we entered. Just want to try Hong Kong's Japanese restaurant.

Location:
Shop B06B, Basement, The Sun Arcade,
28 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon
九龍尖沙咀廣東道28號新太陽廣場地庫B06B店

They have many other branches. Visit their website for more information at http://www.sen-ryo.com.hk/

We requested for ice cube and got ourselves an ice sphere. Interesting ~~~

Tuna and salmon belly sashimi
The salmon belly is fresh and nice but the tuna is not fresh enough. Yet, still edible taste.
Prime fatty tuna (top) and tuna (bottom)
Prime fatty tuna is the shop's recommended sushi and it's good. You would not want to eat the normal tuna after eating the prime fatty tuna. As for the normal tuna, it is weird that the tuna used on the sushi tasted better than the sashimi earlier. Nice!

Yung Kee Restaurant (鏞記)
This is one of the famous roast goose place known among tourists. It's expensive but it's still crowded. If you plan to go at peak hours, remember to make reservation.

Location:
32-40 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong
中環威靈頓街32-40號

http://www.yungkee.com.hk/

We ordered...

Preserved eggs and pickled ginger (特製皮蛋酸薑)
This is 1 serving. This is one of the speciality of this restaurant. It's the softness of the yolk that makes it special.

Stir-fried kai lan (芥藍菜)
Eating vegetables in Hong Kong usually focuses on whether the branch is crunchy and it's another successful story.
Ma po toufu (麻婆豆腐)
It's a little spicy and a little starchy. It's a nice dish to eat with rice but I would think that there's better cook out there for this dish.
Baked chicken in rock salt (正宗鹽焗雞)
This is quite a nice dish although it's baked in rock salt but it's not too salty. It can be eaten on it's own but not many at time. They also sprinkle on a little cube chilis and onion as decorations.
Chicken marinated in dark soya sauce and barbecue pork(桶子油雞,密汁叉燒)
The soya chicken is nicer than the char siew. This is not a good char siew for my taste.
Roasted goose (金牌燒鵝)
OK, being famous for roasted goose is no joke. The skin is fragrant and the meat is just the right chew taste.

Leaf dessert(玉葉粉麵甜品)
This shop is famous for the wanton noodle and desserts but we only have enough space for desserts.

Location:
2 Elgin Street, SOHO Central, Hong Kong
中環蘇豪伊利近街2號

The famous ones and others...

The famous ones:
East 東 - Cold green bean (香草綠豆沙)
I don't usually like green bean dessert but I love this one! It's refreshing and fragrant!

South 南 - Rice ball with sugar coconut sesame (糖不甩)
Seriously good! The rice ball is cooked in ginger soup while coated with sugar, coconut and sesame as the name states it. I can have a plate on my own.

The others:
West 西 - Hot red bean (紅豆沙)
This red bean dessert has a very strong almond taste which I don't like. If you love almond dessert, you may like this.

North 北 - Cold sago with coconut (椰汁西米露)
It's coconut soup with sago. Just a normal sago dessert.

Hong Lin Restaurant (康年餐廳)
This is my favourite cha chan teng 茶餐廳 spot in Hong Kong so far.

Location:
143-145 Tung Choi Street, Prince Edward.
太子通菜街143-145號地下

I love to come here for their pineapple bun with butter 菠蘿油. I think it's better than Kam Wah Cafe because it has a very nice bread fragrant. The top crust is most crispy when it's fresh out from the oven. If you want to takeaway, the bun's fragrant remains but of course the top crust would no longer be crispy. If you love bread, you will love this.

We then continued with the breakfast set...

Tortigloni with botsch (蘿宋湯蘿絲粉)
served with sausage & fried egg with butter bun
The botsch soup is very appetising with alot of vegetables and tortigloni pasta. I became so full that I could not finish the butter bun. Whole set for HKD28.
Satay beef with instant noodles (沙爹牛肉公仔麵)served with ham & egg sandwich
The instant noodle is nice but the satay beef is just so-so. One good thing about the satay beef is the beef is not hard to chew. The sandwich is a healthy one.
